PRTD Application Canada
Need to travel outside Canada before your PR card arrives? If you are a Canadian permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card, you may need a Permanent Resident Travel Document to board a flight, bus, train, or boat back to Canada.
Return to Canada Safely
PRTD applications help permanent residents return to Canada when their PR card is expired, lost, stolen, damaged, or still processing.
Common situation: You became a PR, need to travel urgently, but your first PR card has not arrived yet.
What Is a PRTD Application?
A Permanent Resident Travel Document, commonly called a PRTD, is an official document issued to Canadian permanent residents who are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR card to return by airplane, bus, train, or boat.
Your PR card is normally required when returning to Canada by a commercial carrier. If your PR card has not arrived, has expired, or was lost, stolen, or damaged while you are outside Canada, a PRTD may allow you to travel back to Canada as a permanent resident.
Important: A PR card delay does not cancel your permanent resident status. However, without a valid PR card or PRTD, you may not be allowed to board a commercial flight, train, bus, or boat to Canada.
When Do You Need a PRTD?
PRTD vs PR Card: What Is the Difference?
Used as regular proof of PR status for travel back to Canada. You can only receive a PR card while you are in Canada.
Used when you are outside Canada without a valid PR card and need to return by commercial carrier. A PRTD is usually issued for return travel to Canada.
If returning in a private vehicle, different document options may apply. This is not the same as boarding a commercial flight or bus.
Travelling Soon Without a PR Card?
A rushed or incomplete PRTD application can delay your return to Canada. If you have urgent travel, a lost PR card, or PR card processing delays, book a consultation before you leave or as soon as possible from outside Canada.
Who Can Apply for a PRTD?
You may be eligible to apply for a PRTD if you:
- are a permanent resident of Canada;
- are currently outside Canada;
- do not have a valid PR card with you;
- plan to return to Canada by airplane, bus, train, or boat;
- can show that you meet the permanent resident residency obligation or qualify under applicable exceptions.

Can I apply for a PR card from outside Canada?
No. A PR card is for permanent residents in Canada. If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you may need a PRTD to return.
Can I travel while waiting for my first PR card?
You can leave Canada, but returning by commercial carrier may be difficult without a valid PR card. If your PR card is not ready before you return, you may need to apply for a PRTD from outside Canada.
Is a PRTD usually single entry?
A PRTD is normally used for return travel to Canada. In some situations, multiple-entry PRTDs may be considered, but this depends on the circumstances and passport validity.
What if my PR card expired?
An expired PR card does not automatically mean you lost PR status. However, you may still need a valid PR card or PRTD to board commercial transportation back to Canada.
Can I request urgent processing?
Urgent processing may be possible in certain situations, such as serious illness, urgent travel, or a lost or stolen PR card. Evidence of urgency is important.
